Turmeric Root
turmericTurmeric’s famed yellow-orange color is at its base one of the major alkaloids called curcumin, one of three curcuminoid phenols. Curcumin has been widely researched in the past 20 years for its proven effects as an anti-inflammatory providing specific relief for those with arthritis, rheumatism and may even be beneficial for reducing amyloid plaque build-up associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
Ginger Root
gingerGinger contains very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols. These substances are believed to explain why so many people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis experience reductions in their pain levels and improvements in their mobility when they consume ginger regularly.
Wild Yam Root
wildyamWild Yam is a very good antispasmodic so is good for menstrual cramps, relaxing muscles, soothing nerves, relieving pain, poor circulation and neuralgia, for the inflammatory stage of rheumatoid arthritis and for abdominal and intestinal cramping.
Frankincense
franinscense Frankincense extract contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which have been used in India for centuries to soothe the inflammation associated with certain types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. One of the most exciting properties of this herb is that it does not produce the stomach irritation associated with traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAID’s), like ibuprofen. Prostaglandin E2 is one of the mediators of the immune response and plays a decisive role in the process of inflammation, in the development of fever and of pain. Werz says he is convinced that the active substances can be very beneficial in therapies against diseases like asthma, rheumatoid arthritis or atopic dermatitis. The boswellic acids in Frankincense are active ingredients of the herb, providing the anti-inflammatory response that is critical to deadening the pain felt by arthritics. These constituents of Frankincense work specifically in two different ways to reduce inflammation for arthritics: Boswellic acids block white cell activity in damaged tissue, inhibiting the inflammatory response; and they also work to enhance blood flow to the joint region. Both of these activities provide increased joint mobility and ease stiff joints, which usually plagues arthritics in the morning. Preliminary research also suggests that Frankincense may actually help to preserve cartilage, but more studies are required.
Devil's Claw Root
devils claw Devil’s claw contains iridoid glycosides, components believed to have strong anti-inflammatory effects. It has a high concentration of one type of iridoid, called harpagoside, and some laboratory tests suggest it may relieve pain and inflammation. Several studies show that taking devil’s claw for 8 to 12 weeks can reduce pain and improve physical functioning in people with osteoarthritis. One 4-month study of 122 people with knee and hip osteoarthritis compared devil’s claw and a leading European medication for pain relief. The people who took devil’s claw had as much pain relief as the people who took the medication. Those who took devil’s claw had fewer side effects and needed fewer pain relievers throughout the study.
Licorice Root
licorice Licorice Root has anti-inflammatory,  antispasmodic, and a moderate estrogenic action which might assist with PMS symptoms including breast tenderness, menstrual cramps, nausea and bloating, not to mention mood swings. Consuming licorice root as a tea each day starting about three days prior to one’s anticipated time of the month might help to alleviate PMS symptoms.
Chaparral Leaf
chaparralChaparral Leaf is used for digestion problems including cramps and gas; respiratory tract conditions including colds and infections; and ongoing chronic skin disorders. It is also used for cancer, arthritis, tuberculosis, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, central nervous system conditions, chickenpox, parasite infections, obesity, and snakebite pain. Some people use chaparral for detoxification, or as a tonic or “blood purifier.”
Marshmallow Root
marshmallow Marshmallow extract contains flavanoids, which contain anti-inflammatory properties. The flavanoids are able to reduce inflammation while the mucilage holds them in place and prevents further damage. The extracts also induce phagocytosis, which is the process in which certain cells engulf bacteria, dead cell tissues or other solid particles. This helps speed up the healing process. The mucilage remains unaltered until it reaches the colon, which is why marshmallow works well on most inflammatory digestive disorders. Marshmallow works as a mucilage, producing a thick sticky substance that coats membranes. Marshmallow extract contains flavanoids, which contain anti-inflammatory properties. Yucca
yucca Yucca is a rich source of steroidal saponins, and is used commercially as a saponin source. Saponins have diverse biological effects, including anti-protozoal activity. It has been postulated that saponins may have anti-arthritic properties by suppressing intestinal protozoa which may have a role in joint inflammation. Yucca is also a rich source of polyphenolics, including resveratrol and a number of other stilbenes (yuccaols A, B, C, D and E). These phenolics have anti-inflammatory activity. They are inhibitors of the nuclear transcription factor NFkappaB. NFkB stimulates synthesis of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which causes formation of the inflammatory agent nitric oxide. Yucca phenolics are also anti-oxidants and free-radical scavengers, which may aid in suppressing reactive oxygen species that stimulate inflammatory responses.
Nettle Leaf

nettle Nettle has been studied extensively and has shown promise in treating Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, asthma, bladder infections, bronchitis, bursitis, gingivitis, gout, hives, kidney stones, laryngitis, multiple sclerosis, PMS, prostate enlargement, sciatica, and tendonitis! Externally it has been used to improve the appearance of the hair, and is said to be a remedy against oily hair and dandruff. In Germany today stinging nettles are sold as an herbal drug for prostate diseases and as a diuretic. It is a common ingredient in other herbal drugs produced in Germany for rheumatic complaints and inflammatory conditions (especially for the lower urinary tract and prostate). In the United States many remarkable healing properties are attributed to nettle and the leaf is utilized for different problems than the root. The leaf is used here as a diuretic, for arthritis, prostate, rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure and allergic rhinitis.
